Leading Technology for Offshore Wind Energy

Launching of the Research Association on Offshore Wind Energy Technology 

 

Lee Sangho, the president of the Korea South Power Co., Ltd, appointed as the first president of the Research Association on Offshore Wind Energy Technology, addressed the meeting. The association was established to lead the future of floating offshore wind power generation.

Shin Heyon-geyung, head of the Future Floating Offshore Wind Power Generation GET-Future Research Institute and the Global First-Class Project Team of the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering School at UOU held a foundation ceremony for the Research Association on Offshore Wind Energy Technology. The event was held in the international conference room at the Industry- University Cooperation Building on November 13. The attendees were Jo Sang-rae, the president of the Korean Naval Architecture Association, Han Yeong-seob, the president of the Korean Wind Energy Association, and Lee Im-taek, the president of the Korean Association of Wind Energy Industry. Lee Sangho, the president of Korea South Power Co., Ltd, was appointed its first head.

 This association is expected to develop floating offshore wind energy technology on which much attention is being paid as a future energy resource.

Following the ceremony, there was a presentation on global issues regarding offshore wind energy. Shin Hyeon-Gyoung, sponsored by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, gave a speech on the case of the first model experiment of a new semi-submersible type floating offshore wind turbine (5MW) (FOWT) and its development plan.

This research institution was designated as a government-aided research institution last July and is expected to be granted an estimated 8 billion dollars in subsidies from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy until 2012. The fund will be used to develop technology for offshore wind energy generation. 

In the speech regarding the development direction of domestic wind energy industry, Mr. Lee, the president of the Korea South Power Co., Ltd, said that it is necessary to increase the generating units by relaxing the regulations to increase floating offshore wind energy generation, because it is a future growth engine.  

Three others, Dr. King Yu from ABS, Kevin Banister, the vice president of PPI, and Dr. Song Jin-seob from the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials delivered presentations on cost reduction plans for floating offshore wind energy turbine, respectively.
